Working on the cusp of Fine Art and Design, my practice draws on ideas of interaction, accessibility and adaptability and focuses on creating spaces and furniture that can be altered personally by the user to optimise the space for their needs or wants. I have designed a piece of ‘public furniture’ which combines function and playfulness. Sailing boats have provided the catalyst from this piece – both in terms of design process and the materials selected. Interaction by the user is key, viewers are encouraged to experiment with the sails – either as individuals or in collaboration with others in the space, and are able to easily position the sails at different points. The concept was derived from my own experiences of sailing and the collaboration and interaction you have with the crew and the different components in the boat to maintain an effective sailing environment.
